Knowing how much you need to save for retirement depends on a lot of factors – some of which are impossible to know before you actually get there. For example, it can be difficult to know how much money you are going to need for things like health care. Obviously you hope that Medicare and Social Security will be enough to cover most expenses, but that’s not always the case.
That’s why this new study from Fidelity is so helpful. They calculated the average amount needed to cover health-related expenses a couple retiring today at age 65 will need. The answer: roughly $280,000.
This number assumes both people live an average lifespan, and does not include dental work or any long-term care, such as home health aides or assisted living, which are not covered under Medicare.
