Winners Announced, Scholarships and Awards Presentation and Guest Speakers

What: Working in Support of Education (w!se), a New York City based educational not-for-profit will celebrate students from New York City at a ceremony to reveal the winners of the “21st Annual Quality of Life INNOVATIONS” competition.

The winners will be announced at the event, with representatives from the finalists’ schools in attendance.

Speakers will include:

  • Sterling Roberson, Vice President, United Federation of Teachers
  • Erin Baskett, Managing Partner/CFO/CCO, Autonomous Research

Celebrating its 21st year, the competition invites high school students to become social entrepreneurs by using applied research and developing feasible solutions to solve real-world problems. This year, 792 students wrote proposals. Students who wrote the top 3 winning proposals for community change will be awarded college scholarships. Finalist proposals include:

  • Dietary and Nutritional Accommodations in School Vending Machines
  • The Effect of School Policing on the Graduation Rates of NYC Public High Schools
  • Financial Education and its Effect on College Consumers’ Financial Behavior
  • Heat It Up: Joining the Fight Against Plastic Bag Pollution with Solar-Powered Recycling
  • Out of the Darkness: Ending the Stigma of Mental Illness
  • Read to Succeed: Bridging the Word Gap Between Children of High and Low Income Backgrounds
  • Reducing Human Exposure to PM2.5

The competition seeks to encourage school districts and administrators to promote social entrepreneurship and to prepare students for college by developing strong research and problem solving skills.

The ceremony will also honor:

  1. Alison Collard, Hanin Dari, Riccardo Monico and Benjamin Spiegel of Brooklyn Technical High School for improving the quality of life of pedestrians through their creative smartwatch app designed to protect children from car accidents.
  2. PS 54 X Fordham Bedford Academy for exceptional commitment to improving the quality of life in the Bronx through their “Clean Up Your Pup” Campaign.

Who: Interviews and photo opportunities will be available with guest speakers, students and w!se leaders.
